A Dutch designer is working with scientists to create glow in the dark trees that will replace street lights. They are made by crossing DNA from luminescent marine life with the DNA of plants. Street lights are very expensive to maintain, they make up a cities biggest chunk of energy bills. Bioluminescence is a chemical reaction that some living things - like fireflies, jellyfish and a few types of algae use to produce their own light. It is an incredibly beautiful phenomenon and most importantly requires no energy consumption.
